At 61 years old today, Yu Suzuki is one of the most recognized game developers, as he has had a big impact on the video game world. A pioneer in several genres, it is to him that we owe the Virtua Fighter and Shenmue series.

The last episode of the series, Shenmue III, has been talked about for many years. First with its official announcement in 2015 at the Sony conference during the E3, creating enthusiasm among the fans of the series, then with its record in terms of funding on Kickstarter, the game reached its goal of 2 million dollars in less than 24 hours. Things then went a bit worse for Shenmue III because the first visuals revealed which greatly disappointed the players and as everyone knows, with the Epic Games exclusive on PC.

Finally, after its release on November 19, Shenmue III still managed to get quite a decent launch. The game certainly has not been a dazzling success, but the critics, although being mixed on the side of the media, are in fact pretty good from the players.

But now is the time to look to the future. Yu Suzuki warned us that Shenmue III is not the last installment in the saga. He recently expressed himself in the Japanese magazine Famitsu, which interviews a number of creators in the industry at the beginning of each year to find out their plans for the coming year. Here is what Yu Suzuki said:

Q: What is your keyword for 2020?
YS: “A new project start”.
Q: What is your New Year’s Resolution?
YS: To leverage my know-how from Shenmue III and focus on planning a world with even more freedom.

Shenmue III – Gameplay

It’s difficult to guess what is this new project right now. Of course, we can think of the follow-up of Shenmue III, but it could also be something completely different. Anyway, Yu Suzuki doesn’t seem to want to be unemployed in 2020, and we can’t wait to see what he has in store for the future.
