The bygone days of Micro Machines were all fine and dandy, but what if you were to raise these pint-sized stakes to something a little bigger? Rumbora Party Games lays it all on the line with their new title Tinker Racers, a top-down racer with an elimination edge. Should you put the pedal to the metal, or does this racer blow it at the starting line?
Tinker Racers Review
The perspective and general control scheme made famous decades ago is alive and well in Tinker Racers. Players will speed along offices, bedrooms, and kitchens in a top down viewpoint, drifting at every turn and outpacing their opponents. Threats include cutting board ramps, runaway marbles, and the odd stapler across each track.
However, in the main campaign mode, it’s not enough that you win – others must fail. In order to get ahead, players must lead the pack and leave others in the dust. By getting in the lead and having the camera get your opponents out of frame, you can eliminate the competition and score a point, with the first person to five points winning the round.
This proposition certainly keeps players on their toes, especially when threats stand in the way between you and victory. While the control scheme plays it fast and loose with drifts along every turn, this system provides a number of clutch moments. The AI is balanced just right, without coming across as brain dead or overly cheap. The environment can often be a bigger obstacle than the rival racers, but familiarity and memorization help a great deal – just like the best arcade racers on the market.
It also pays to know the environments in Tinker Racers due to the health mechanic in its campaign mode. Your ride can get damaged, with it starting at 100% and gradually deteriorating with any bump along the way. Though we appreciate this mechanic, we never came across any instance where we were in any danger.
Though the Campaign of Tinker Racers can be finished fairly quickly, there is a fair amount to keep players going. A Dark Mode can be unlocked, while Time Trials with developer times are just begging to be beaten. Single Races with five laps can also be jumped into, though tracks must be unlocked. Finally, a Free for All mode serves as a way to enjoy the title with less pressure. In all, the 32 achievements based on times, scores, and finishing tracks will keep players racing.
Just be warned that there is little variety between each track. Though there are multiple tracks, expect to see the same worlds multiple times. Seeing the sixth version of a bedroom track just lacks the impact of a fresh environment.
Tinker Racers pint-sized racers put the pressure on with its elimination-based gameplay. Though this title favors crazy drifting over tight controls, those who can get a grip on its mechanics will have fun trouncing the competition.
