In March 2019, we discovered that Daedalic Entertainment was working on a new project. It’s not just any license, since with The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, the studio decided to tackle the famous saga of JRR Tolkien, focusing on one of its emblematic characters: Gollum. Very little information was revealed on the game when it was announced, but Carsten Fichtelmann, CEO of Daedalic Entertainment, has given us some clues about the type of game that awaits us:
“You already have that big conflict in the character, two voices talking to you continuously, which means there is a good reason there are decisions to make in the game: the Smeagol decisions or the Gollum decision. We have the story that we all know from the book, but everything that happens to him before he appears in the book are the main things we will see in our game. We will tell the story before he first appears in the books.”
Gollum will not look like this but he should be just as scary
This lays the groundwork for The Lord of the Rings: Gollum. The duality of the character will, therefore, be at the heart of the game and it even seems to be a key component of the game design. So we’re a long way from what we’ve seen in other games based on Tolkien’s universe, such as Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor and Middle-Earth: Shadow of War. All this is not quite surprising if you consider that Daedalic is best known for his narrative adventure games like Deponia or The Pillars of the Earth.
We learned a little more about The Lord of the Rings: Gollum in the pages of the latest issue of EDGE magazine. And fans of the film may be disappointed, but Gollum will not look like the one presented in the saga of Peter Jackson as played by Andy Serkis. Gollum will be a character “whom you can almost love, and at the same time someone you may be really afraid of.”
Lord of the Rings: Gollum – the game logo
The other recent news is that The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will indeed be released on PS5 and Xbox Series X, as well as on PC, knowing that the game is currently scheduled for 2021. Even if we still have no visuals of the game outside of the logo, we now know that the game will be an action-adventure type with infiltration phases, and that we will come across the Nazgûl.
We will have to be patient and wait a bit for The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, but the game looks promising to say the least.
