If things continue like this it’s not sure at all that we are seeing the sequel to Double Fine Productions’ game at any point. The launch of Psychonauts 2 has been delayed again, and things don´t seem to be going very well. After Microsoft bought the studio and the publishing rights from the previous owners, all the backers are getting is bad news. Psychonaut 2 has been funded through Fig, a crowdfunding platform similar to Kickstarter, and the patience of the people that expected to be able to play the game in 2018 is running thin.
“There really shouldn’t be too many other noticeable changes for you at all, at least not for a while…with one notable exception: We’re now targeting next year for release,” Double Fine said through a recent update on Fig. “We know it’s always disappointing when you have to wait a bit longer, but we also know that you are an amazing, supportive bunch, who—just like us—want the game to be as good as possible.”
Even though they didn’t really explain any reasons for the delay, Double Fine confirmed that Psychonauts 2 will be launching on all the platforms it was supposed to be released originally; those are PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. Some players were concerned about the possibility of the game not launching on Sony’s console after Microsoft became the owner. We assume that they just need more time to work in the game and that the delay of the release date for the game is directly caused by the changes in the ownership. Even with all those problems, the sequel of the critically acclaimed Psychonauts continues being one of the most anticipated games, and many players are eagerly waiting to see more of Raz adventures in the new installment of the franchise.

The confirmation of the platforms available at launch is not the only good news that we got, because we also could watch the first gameplay trailer of Psychonauts 2. If you consider that the game was originally announced at The Game Awards 2015, it’s about time that backers got a bit more than promises. Let’s just hope that the development of the game continues without any problems and that we can play Psychonauts 2 at some point next year.
