A Look Into Tomorrow’s Hard Disk

Data is best stored on hard disks. It is easier to access when data stored in a hard disk. Of course, they can also be stored online. While there is nothing wrong with storing data online, you would have to rely on the internet to access your files.

With a hard disk, there’s no need to rely on the internet to access your files. Since it’s very convenient to use, a hard disk with huge data storage capacity is always in demand. The thing is, a hard disk with huge data capacity might not be portable. If it’s not portable, then it won’t be that convenient to take everywhere.

Ideally, the size of a hard disk should remain small as its data storage capacity increases. At the moment, that kind of hard disk is a myth. Hopefully, tomorrow, it becomes a reality. Here’s a look at tomorrow’s hard disk.

A recent breakthrough discovery of the world’s first high-temperature single-molecule magnet (SMM) opens doors to future exciting developments in massive storage capacity increase in hard disks without increasing their physical size.

Before the publication of the study Magnetic Hysteresis up to 80 Kelvin in a Dysprosium Metallocene Single-Molecule Magnet led by Professor of Chemistry Richard Layfield at the University of Sussex in England, it was only possible to synthesize single-molecule magnets with blocking temperatures that were reached by cooling with considerable expensive and scarce liquid helium.

The team at the University of Sussex in collaboration with Sun-Yat Sen University in China and the University of Jyväskylä in Finland, reported a new single-molecule magnet (SMM) which is a type of material that retains magnetic information up to a characteristic blocking temperature.

(Via: https://interestingengineering.com/first-high-temperature-single-molecule-magnet-can-revolutionize-hard-disk-storage-capacity)

The characteristics of the SMMs are paving way to a very tiny device that could store huge data.

SMMs are molecules with the characteristic of remembering the direction of a magnetic field that has been applied to them over relatively long periods of time once the magnetic field is switched off. This makes possible to write information into molecules.

“Our new result is a milestone that overcomes a major obstacle to developing new molecular information storage materials and we are excited about the prospects for advancing the field even further,” said Professor Layfield.

The fact that digital data was stored in the magnetic field of a single atom is a very significant step in revolutionizing the hard disk.

Single-molecule magnets have the potential for important applications such as high-density digital storage media as well as parts of microprocessors in quantum computers.

This magnetic breakthrough is something to look forward to since we’re always looking for ways and means to store huge data in just one place.

The single-molecule magnet that is set to play such an important role in the future of quantum computing was the result of the co-ordinated effort of three universities.

The synthetic work and characterization of the prepared compounds was carried out by Professor Layfield’s research group while magnetic measurements were performed at Sun Yat-sen University under the leadership of Professor Ming-Liang Tong. Postdoctoral researcher Akseli Mansikkamäki carried out theoretical calculations and analyses at the Department of Chemistry of the University of Jyväskylä.

Team Sonic Racing Review

Sonic and co. return in a brand new addition to the long-running racing franchise with the release of Team Sonic Racing. Mixing the fast and chaotic nature of karting games with an exciting new take on team-based gameplay and strategy, this title hopes to redefine the depth of the genre. Is this title worth lacing up those red and white Power Sneakers, or should this be one watched from the sidelines?

Team Sonic Racing Review

At its core, Team Sonic Racing is an attempt to emulate the genre defining juggernaut Mario Kart. Following the success of Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing Transformed, the team at Sumo Digital return with an all-new, Sonic-based cast, brand new gameplay mechanics and a host of new features hoping to dethrone Nintendo’s franchise.

If you’re at all familiar with the host of games in the karting genre, many of Team Sonic Racing’s features will be immediately recognizable. There’s a number of characters, each with their own kart and style of play. The Speed types excel at, well, top speed, while Technique players and Power players have other benefits such as avoiding slow down penalties on rough terrain, the ability to break through parts of the tracks for shortcuts, and even access better Wisps (weapons).

The style of the races is also very familiar, but not at all in a negative manner. There’s tons of different races tracks – 21 in total, both old and new – each with a host of obstacles and challenges. Each race consists of nailing that perfect drift, hitting that clinch weapon shot, and taunting that opponent you just sent flying into oblivion. All of the beloved features of the karting genre are here in full force.

Team Sonic Racing Review

The most interesting aspect of Team Sonic Racing, and arguably its greatest feature, is the addition of cooperative teamplay mechanics. The average karting game consists of boosts, weapons, and drifting, rewarding solo skill and style over anything else. While Team Sonic Racing embodies many of those elements, it strips away at the core of the genre with several features aimed at encouraging and rewarding team tactics and strategies.

In the Team Racing modes, players are a member of a three man team. With four teams in each race, there are a total of 12 racers altogether. All drivers on a team work in tandem to increase their overall team score, which is influenced by a number of interesting factors. The most valuable factor, is of course, where you finish in the final standings of the race, but if things are a little tight at the top of the table, it’s the squad that showed the most teamwork that will come out on top.

Various actions are available throughout the race to aid your allies and increase your team score. You can send weapons and pick-ups to other members of your team, request items if you’re in a bit of a pickle, and work together to get enough team score to launch the Team Ultimate Boost – a short period of incredible speed and invincibility. Driving in tandem with other members of your team offers further abilities to increase your chances of winning. You can Slingshot past your allies by following their slipstream and …

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 reveals another clan of the Camarilla

Paradox Interactive brings back the Clan of the Rose, Clan Toreador, “creators of art and beauty.” Toreador’s is one of the oldest and most influential of the vampire families. This clan is one of the largest clans in the city, with beauty-obsessed Seattleites artists, architects, poets, and songwriters among their Kindred. The clan has been in Seattle since the early days, and its members can be found in art exhibits, nightclubs, and between the people with social, political or cultural power.

If you decide to become part of the Clan Toreador in Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2, Presence and Celerity Disciplines are your forte. One will “turn a crowd into an audience,” and use distraction into garner attention, or you can turn “aggression into adoration.” The Celerity discipline will allow you to “push your bodies to incredible speeds.”

Presence gives you a couple of very interesting skills that can be used without fear of breaking the Masquerade, something that can be very valuable.
First of those is Awe, that will let you strike a pose and freeze all before you in adoring wonder, keeping them oblivious of anything else but you for a short while. Your other skill will be Entrance, that will form a group of admirers around you. They will follow you potentially distracting anyone close.

The Clan Toreador shares the Celerity discipline with the Brujah. Although they are not as strong as the Brujah they still can pose a huge threat due to their uncanny speed. They can use Unseen Storm and Accelerate to move at incredible speed in combat, so fast that it will look that time has stopped around them. But they will have to be careful because the use of supernatural speed before mortals is seen as a Masquerade Violation and it would get them in trouble.

Blooslines 2 – Toreador

There are only a couple of vampire clans more to be revealed, but we can already get a pretty accurate picture of how they mingle with human society without being detected. It´s yet to be seen how important your role and your story will be in the rather complicated relations between the different vampire clans, as each of them has very particular interests and objectives, making it all even more interesting.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 will appear sometime next year for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
