The 2018 PS4-exclusive smash-hit Marvel’s Spider-Man is widely considered to be the greatest superhero video game of all time. It’s often seen in higher regard than Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham City. Today, the NPD revealed that Marvel’s Spider-Man officially outsold Arkham City despite being on a single platform, earning it the title of best-selling superhero video game of all time. This achievement is particularly impressive due to Arkham City being available on several platforms for almost eight years, whereas Marvel’s Spider-Man released on just PlayStation 4 for less than a year. That’s not the only milestone the game accomplished as it also became the fastest-selling PlayStation exclusive of all time, besting God of War of the same year.

We rated  Marvel’s Spider-Man a 9/10 in our review, lauding it in nearly every single aspect. The storytelling, graphics, writing, and gameplay are all of the utmost quality. The immense success of Insomniac’s magnum opus hasn’t been ignored outside of the gaming industry, as Sony Animation’s incredible Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse snuck in the signature suit from the PS4 exclusive. In the aftermath of Black Friday 2018, Sony announced that Marvel’s Spider-Man sold over 9 million. Comparatively speaking, a week after launch Warner Bros announced that Arkham City sold over 4.6 million copies across all platforms. While we do not know the current sales numbers for either game, we can assume that both games surpassed well over 10 million copies at this point. By virtue of being exclusive, it’s fair to say Spider-Man had a very strong marketing campaign and PlayStation 4 owners buy AAA, Sony-published games in droves.

Due to the immense success of Spider-Man, it’s pretty obvious Insomniac is currently hard at work crafting the sequel, potentially for the next-gen PlayStation. What do you think of this milestone? Do you expect Insomniac to celebrate in some form or are you just waiting for the inevitable sequel to arrive? Let’s talk about it in the comments below!
