Magic: The Gathering exceeded all expectations when it was first launched. The collectible trading cards game created by Richard Garfield rapidly became one of the most popular card games worldwide. The cards, characters, and mechanics of the game have been used as a foundation to create complex lore that has been delivered to the public in a variety of ways, including novels and video games. Wizards of the Coast bought the franchise and after that, the multiple branches, stories, and settings were organized into a more linear storyline that follows the adventures of several Planeswalkers.

In that context, we have seen the release of several videogames that recreated the gameplay of Magic: The Gathering. There are a few Duels of the Planeswalkers games that allow you to collect cards, build your deck and fight other players in card duels, but Magic: The Gathering Arena is probably the one that represents better the style of play of the original game.

A few weeks ago it was announced that we would see a few new games based on Magic: The Gathering this year. One of those is Magic: Legends, which has turned out to be an RPG action game.

As you can see in the video, Magic: Legends features gameplay that is very similar to the one you can experience the games of the Diablo series. It will allow you to create a deck of cards that will determine what abilities your Planeswalker will have, but other than that it seems to be quite far away from the usual summoning and spellcasting mechanics that are the core of the original game.

We are not sure that this type of gameplay is going to be attractive to the fans of Magic: The Gathering but we will have to wait a bit longer until we can experience what Magic: Legends has to offer. Developer Cryptic should be launching the game as a free to play title this year.
