A few months ago Riot Games announced that they were going to launch a few new games this year. One of those is Legends of Runeterra, a new free-to-play online digital collectible card game. This announcement wouldn’t be too relevant if Riot Games wasn’t the developer of one of the most popular games worldwide, League of Legends.
Riot is moving out of its comfort zone with Legends of Runeterra since the game is completely different from League of Legends. It happens that the CCG genre has experienced a resurgence too, and since Blizzard launched Hearthstone we have seen plenty of companies launching their respective games, including Gwent from CD Projekt RED, Artifact from Valve, or Magic: The Gathering Arena from Wizards of the Coast. These don’t seem to be an obstacle for the development of Legends of Runeterra and Riot’s new title seems to be progressing through it’s closed beta phase without problems.
Right now Legends of Runeterra is only available to some streamers and other people who were accepted in the current phase but everyone else will be able to give a try to the game for the first time when the open beta starts. Riot Games has confirmed that the open beta phase for Legends of Runeterra on PC is starting on January 24 at 8 pm CET. If you visit Legends of Runeterra website you can pre-register for the open beta and have access to it one day earlier.
The huge popularity of League of Legends and a well-designed marketing campaign has made Legends of Runeterra a highly anticipated title already. The final version of the game will be released later this year, but until then the game is bound to become quite popular. It is yet to be seen what kind of impact Legends of Runeterra will have in the genre but it is quite possible that the developers intend for it to be part of the competitive esports scene one way or another. We will have to see how everything unfolds.
