Valve seems quite determined to make Half-Life: Alyx a huge success. It’s been quite a few years since the original Half-Life was released on PC and the announcement of the upcoming title created a huge expectation among the players who enjoyed the series. Whether you have played any of the previous Half-Life titles or not, you have now a great opportunity to experience the story of Gordon Freeman. Valve has decided to let everyone download and play for free the previous installments in the FPS series, including Half-Life, Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episode 1, and Half-Life 2: Episode 2.

According to a post on Steam,

“The Half-Life: Alyx team believes that the best way to enjoy the new game is to play through the old ones, especially Half-Life 2 and the episodes, so we want to make that as easy as possible.”

Half-Life games are free on Steam

The same post reveals that all those games are playable for free already, and they will continue like that until the release of Half-Life: Alyx, which will happen at some point in March. That means that everyone has a couple of months to learn about the story in the series. The events in Half-Life: Alyx take place between what happens in Half-Life and Half-Life 2, so it’s advisable to know what the story is about before playing the new game if you want to have a complete experience.

The list of Half-Life games playable is complemented with the expansion packs Half-Life: Opposing Force and Half-Life: Blue Shift, as well as Team Fortress Classic for those that love multiplayer.

Unlike Half-Life: Alyx, none of those games is VR but they will provide good knowledge of the franchise and make the experience much better for the players when the new game is released. It is a shame that Half-Life: Alyx will not be accessible to those that don’t have or prefer not to use VR headsets but we still hope for a change in the future.
