It’s rather curious that one of the games of the GTA series is not available on Steam anymore considering that GTA V was one of the most popular games in 2019 on that platform. It’s true that Grand Theft Auto IV is not the same as GTA V, but still, there are many players that love the franchise and quite a few of them would probably want to play as Niko Belic in Liberty City.
Grand Theft Auto 4 is still showing on Steam but the button to buy it has been removed. Initially, some people speculated several reasons for this to have unexpectedly happened, and Rockstar Games has made a statement to clarify the matter. According to a Rockstar rep:
“Grand Theft Auto 4 was originally created for the Games For Windows Live platform. With Microsoft no longer supporting Games For Windows Live, it is no longer possible to generate the additional keys needed to continue selling the current version of the game. We are looking at other options for distributing GTA4 for PC and will share more information as soon as we can.”
The most obvious choice for Rockstar Games would be to come up with a new version of Grand Theft Auto IV that they could distribute through their own digital platform now that they have a launcher, but we don’t know if they will go for that option or not. It is worthy of notice that Microsoft discontinued its support to Games For Windows Live back in 2013, so Rockstar has had more than enough time to patch the game and avoid any possible issues. Therefore it is hard to decide who is responsible for the current situation.
On the good side of things, all players that already own Grand Theft Auto IV on Steam can continue to play the game without any worries, and you can still use our comparator to find the best price to buy the game.
