Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Review

Another year means another Call of Duty game. This time around, veteran developers Treyarch look to bring the sixth installment of the Black Ops series to current and next-generation hardware with the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. Promising the same thrilling multiplayer, the return of the fan-favorite Zombie Mode, and an entirely new campaign, Cold War looks to carry on the Black Ops name…but does it do enough?

Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Review

Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Review

The campaign in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War takes place in the early 1980s and serves as a narrative bridge between Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops II. It follows CIA agent Russell Adler and his elite crew of soldiers as they attempt to track down Perseus, a Soviet Union spy who is looking to turn the tide of the Cold War.

One of the immediate standout elements of the campaign is the attention to detail on its fantastic cast of characters. The facial animations, the voice acting, the lip syncing – they all come together to deliver some of the best visuals the franchise has seen to date. While the campaign is short, and not quite worth the price of entry alone, it’s a much-welcomed addition for an aging FPS fan that struggles to keep up in other areas of the Call of Duty experience.

Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Review

For a first in the Call of Duty series, Cold War introduces player choice throughout the story campaign. Many of these offer an illusion of choice, providing options that have little to no effect on the story itself. However, others are major; major enough to determine the outcome of the entire Cold War era. I played through the campaign a couple of times, switching up the choices and decisions I made. For a franchise that is synonymous with fast-paced, arcade-like multiplayer action, having this depth and variation in the main campaign was a surprise, and one that I really enjoyed. Your choices will result in the deaths of allies, the fate of your enemies, and the very survival of the free world. It is probably the most fun I’ve had in a Call of Duty story in many years.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s story may have pushed the narrative in new and creative directions, but for the most part, the rest of the game remains much in the same. Multiplayer returns, arguably the series’ biggest appeal – even after releasing the same game year after year. If you’re a fan of the Call of Duty formula, there’s everything you could want in a multiplayer experience.

A few new modes add some much-needed refreshment to the experience. An arsenal of guns that can be customized more than you’ll ever need to customize anything. Not that the range of arsenal matters, because nearly all lobbies are filled with players running the same weapons and kits. Ongoing challenges, achievements, and tasks give you plenty to aim for as you load into the next lobby, so there’s a lot to do if you’re willing. One of the few changes to multiplayer that I noticed, was the the extension of the Kill Cam.

Instead of highlighting a single or …

Streets of Kamurocho Review

Yakuza fans are no doubt acquainted with the bustling cityscape of Kamurocho, but Empty Clip Studios and SEGA looks at this locale in a new perspective with their new side-scrolling beat-’em-up Streets of Kamurocho. Does Kiryu’s pixelated outing hit harder than a bicycle to the head, or is 3D the way to go?

Streets of Kamurocho Review

Featuring mainstays Kazuma Kiryu and Goro Majima, Streets of Kamurocho transports players to the titular city in Tokyo after the death of the Tojo Clan’s Third Chairman. With violence taking over the streets, it’s up to these two anti-heroes to bash some heads and restore honor to their family.

However, the real star of this game is its action. Closely following the beats of Streets of Rage 2, Streets of Kamurocho tasks players with fighting waves of Chinese mafia and yakuza members every step of the way. Each character has a moveset that is nearly identical to that of Streets of Rage 2’s Axel Stone, right down to the flaming fists. Armed with a jump, an attack, and a special move that drains health when an attack connects, it’s surprisingly robust for how few buttons are used. Whether one is throwing a bad guy into another bad guy or delivering a jump kick into an unsuspecting foe, players will no doubt be absorbed in its frantic and chaotic action. Also, when in doubt, there are plenty of traffic cones and knives that will work in a pinch.

Consisting of one stage, two minibosses, and a final boss, there is just enough variety to make the initial playthrough fresh. Taking players through the lively halls of the Bacchus and the streets of the city shows off just how great the sprite work really is. Though it is a disappointment that the soundtracks are lifted wholesale from the SEGA Genesis original, there is just enough new content here to prevent it from feeling like a retread.

It’s just a shame that it only has one stage to offer. Completing a run and taking down Akira Nishiki leads to a new round that has players running through the same stage, albeit at a higher difficulty setting. While an additional stage or two would be welcome, the title stresses replayability with its global leaderboard and scoring system.

Outside of the single player and two player leaderboards, there is also the chance to unlock a third character. Although all three characters play the same, this is still a welcome addition nonetheless. In addition, though there are no achievements, the leaderboard is fairly active right now, which is a perfect fit for all of the score chasers out there.

Streets of Kamurocho pays great honor to both the Streets of Rage and Yakuza series of games. Though there is not much to this package, those weaned on beat-em-ups old and new will enjoy their brief jaunt in Tokyo.

This review of Streets of Kamurocho was done on the PC. The game was freely downloaded.

Bugsnax Gets “Snakkolades” Trailer

Discover what critics are saying about Young Horses’ Bugsnax with the “snakkolades” trailer for the game.

The trailer, which can be seen below, features scores from Gamepur, God is a Geek, Dualshockers, The Sixth Axis, and other outlets. It has received high praise, with The Onion saying that it “looks like […] honestly […] one of the […] best games for the PS5.”

Bugsnax – Snakkolades Trailer | PS5, PS4

Now available for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, Bugsnax tasks players with exploring Snaktooth Island in an attempt to capture and find half-bug-half-snack creatures called Bugsnax. Once captured, Bugsnax can be fed to the local Grumpuses, transforming them based on the Bugsnak they eat. In all, there are more than 100 Bugsnak species available for capture.

British indie pop band Kero Kero Bonito (of “Picture This” fame) did the theme song for the game, and inspiration for the title was taken from such titles as Ape Escape, Dark Cloud and Viva Piñata.

Call Of Duty Black Ops Cold War Truth (Solovetsky) Or Lie (Duga)

Call Of Duty Black Ops Cold War Truth (Solovetsky) Or Lie (Duga)
One of the games most important choices. This guide on Call Of Duty Black Ops Cold War Truth (Solovetsky) Or Lie (Duga) tells you what happens if you tell the truth and what happens if you lie, in a decision that shapes the end of your journey in the Cold War.

There are multiple endings in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. This choice determines two of the different endings as, during the final mission, you learn your true identity and eventually, you make the decision on whether to side with the West or the Soviet Union.

Call Of Duty Black Ops Cold War Truth (Solovetsky) Or Lie (Duga)

If You Choose [Truth] Solovetsky. It’s Solovetsky Monastery
If you choose the truth, you side with the Americans in an attempt to take down the Soviet Union. Adler calls Washington to arrange an attack on the Solovetsky Monastery. This launches The Final Countdown mission where you and the team attempt to hunt down Perseus. You assault the monastery and destroy all of the satellites, stopping the Soviet’s from using them to detonate the nuclear missiles. This is the good guy ending. You stop the attack, disarm the nukes, and save the free world.

If You Choose [Lie] Duga. The radar array near Duga
They believe your lie and speak to Washington about dispatching troops to Duga. You then have to use a radio and organize an ambush at Duga. When you arrive at Duga, you signal an ambush and wipe out the entire team. You then detonate the nukes and learn the true identity of Perseus.

There are other variations of the ending depending on the minor choices you made throughout the game, but these are the two most major endings that we’ve found so far.
