Metro Exodus Review

Story 305779784

We live in a world obsessed with post-apocalyptic stories, to the point where the genre is a bit crowded (especially in games and film). That doesn’t mean there aren’t any stories left to tell but that they have to work harder to stand apart. How does 4A Games deal with their trek into the genre?

Metro Exodus is the third game in the Metro series, with Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light originally releasing on PlayStation 3, and then as a collection on PlayStation 4. You are Artyom, a soldier who, for some unexplained reason, doesn’t talk. You are supported by your wife, Anna, and a crew of special forces soldiers who admire you. Metro Exodus is definitely heavy on the story it’s telling but is it worth spending your time on? Let’s get into what makes the game tick.

Endgame

Metro Exodus Review

Metro Exodus is set in Russia, with events beginning near Moscow. A civilization of survivors have created a home underground, in the metro. It’s believed that there are no other survivors outside of the underground metro. This game follows the events of Metro: Last Light. Even if you haven’t played the first two entries in the series, Metro Exodus does a good job of catching you up with significant events.

You play as Artyom, a seemingly mute scout searching for life on the surface. Based on other characters’ observations, Artyom keeps risking his life due to his dream of finding a habitable place to live on the surface.

The biggest flaw in the story is the fact that Arytom isn’t voiced. He’s portrayed as a passionate, strong character, but that doesn’t come across when other characters constantly speak for him. “Artyom wants this,” and “Artyom wants that” has much less impact than if he spoke for himself. It’s weird because, during longer loading screens, Arytom is given voiced recaps of his thoughts on events that just took place. It’s really awkward to see him motioning (throughout the game) with his hands in reply to the other characters but not saying anything.

The reason this doesn’t work is that Artyom IS actually talking but his lines don’t show up in text or voice. Supporting characters put words in Artyom’s mouth, and a strong character is made to look like a puppet, more than anything else.

Metro Exodus Review

Main character’s unexplained muteness aside, Metro Exodus does have an interesting enough story. You’ll find a train, which serves as your main transportation and also a base of operations. The train serves as the connector between areas on the surface world. When you’re not on missions, you’ll be traveling to the next destination by train.

The relationships between the characters and seeing them interact with each other during downtime are my favorite parts of the story. Later in the game, there’s a particular moment that really touched my ice-cold heart. I won’t go into it for spoiler reasons, but I wish the game had more moments like that one.

Unfortunately, Metro Exodus has only a few highlights during the story. Many of the supporting cast feel like throwaway characters. Anna and Miller are really the only other strongly written characters. The game tries to get you to feel for some of the

New Features Coming to Red Dead Online Beta February 26

Red Dead Online - Gamers Heroes
Rockstar Games announced today that the next wave of new features and updates for the Red Dead Online Beta will make their way to the game on February 26.

With this update comes a number of tweaks to how player blips appear on the map. Visibility of blips over long distances has been reduced, and your own map position won’t display to others unless you are within 150 meters.

Overly aggressive players will also be targeted in this update, with offenders having their map position and the position of their Posse members more visible to other players, with a progressively darkening dot that gradually changes from blue to dark red.

Players will also be able to initiate Parley, which applies to your attacker’s entire Posse after pulling off a single kill. Players can also initiate a Feud, Leader Feud, or Posse Feud after one kill, which transforms a dispute into a timed mini-deathmatch in Free Roam. Beware though – players who have racked up high bounties could be beset by NPC Bounty Hunters in this update.

Rockstar Games will also add a number of Daily Challenges to take on across the Red Dead Online Beta that will dish out both Gold Nuggets and XP.

Finally, select weapons will be re-balanced (which includes the Varmint Rifle), voice chat will only work at closer proximity, and carcasses and pelts and will be more persistent after respawning or death.

Arma 3: Try it for free!

If you are not very fond of red roses and chocolate, this is an idea that you might like to occupy your Valentine’s Day. From 14 February at 19h (Paris time) to 18 February at the same time, you will be able to storm the battlefield, because Arma 3 will be playable for free on Steam. All game content will be accessible during this trial, including the Arma 3 Apex expansion.

Released in 2013, Arma 3 is a military open-world multiplayer simulation game. The game has, of course, a solo campaign, which takes the form of three episodes: Survive, Adapt, and Defeat. In the campaign, you play as Ben Kerry, a corporal in the US Army. But Arma 3 also features a multiplayer side, with many modes available that allow you to play even local co-op or online.

Loading ammunition in Arma 3

The latest addition to the game is the Warlords mode, included in the game last December through a free update. Warlords is a competitive game mode in which two teams compete to storm the opponent’s base. You will play as either NATO or CSAT, having to progress by taking control of some area directed by an AI. In this way, you will clear a safe path for your troops to reach the opposing team’s camp during the game. You can also earn command points, allowing you to get different resources, weapons, vehicles, strategic benefits, and even reinforcements by air.

Arma 3 is a must-have for all the fans of the genre, and it’s arguably the richest military simulation game to date. With more than 40 weapons like assault or precision rifles, pistols, grenades, and more than twenty vehicles, including tanks, fighter planes and submarines, it puts a whole arsenal at your disposal. And that’s not all, because Arma 3 also focuses on the community. Indeed, you can create and share scenarios, but also Mods to enjoy more content and enrich your gaming experience.

To take advantage of this free trial weekend, visit the game page in the Steam store on February 14, starting at 7pm. And to get Arma 3 for the best price, take a look at our comparator.

Little Comet Review

Space might be the final frontier, but it’s also a cutesy place to play minigolf in Outgunned Games’ new title Little Comet. The star of this adventure is certainly catered toward a younger demographic, but does it prove to be a compelling adventure for all ages?

Little Comet Review

In Little Comet, players take control of a cheerful little star with the brightest cheeks. He must find his way to the black hole on the other side of the screen, and it’s up to players to launch him on his way. Using the mouse, players will grab directly behind this little star, releasing when it’s time for him to go. Much like a rubber band, this star can go farther if this mechanic is used to do a larger wind-up. For those who need an added boost, players can click the mouse while in flight to travel an additional short distance.

It’s all easy to understand, and the game eases players into things with levels that are overly simplistic. However, things quickly ramp up with the introduction of new concepts. After the initial levels, players will have to contend with planets with their own field of gravity, spheroids that contain water that slows your movement, electrified walls, and even traffic that packs a number of hurtling asteroids. There is certainly no shortage of variety, and though this title is a bit on the short side, there is enough to keep players interested throughout.

All of these mechanics are wrapped into an overly sweet aesthetic that is pleasing to the eye. Walls let out musical notes, planets grin from ear to ear, and children cry with joy upon the completion of each level. Those weaned on more macho titles might balk at these aesthetics, but it sets out to do what it intended, and it does it well.

Little Comet - Gamers Heroes

Just be warned that this game quickly ramps up in challenge. Early levels give way to races against polygons that have twice as many turns as you, suitcases that weigh you down, multiple switches that lie just out of reach, and other things that prevent you from your mission. There is no penalty for taking your sweet time, though players can only get all three stars each level provides by collecting all items and completing each stage under a set amount of turns. Some levels absolutely require multiple playthroughs to get all three stars, which encourages some replayability at the expense of finding the perfect route through each stage. It’s a trade-off, one that will appeal to some and be a turn-off to others.

The more casual fans among us need not worry about all of that though. Worlds are unlocked by collecting a set amount of stars, and four levels that can be completed in any order are unlocked in each area. Requirements for progression are pretty lax, so those who would rather avoid certain stages can certainly do so. Note that there are no achievements incorporated into this title.

Little Comet is a casual title that packs just enough challenge to appeal to more hardcore gamers. Don’t be fooled by its cutesy aesthetics – completionists will have a field day getting every last star.

Apex Legends on a roll with 25 million players in a week

Yahoo! Finance recently reported that Apex Legends is an early hit for Electronic Arts Incorporated. This doesn’t come as a surprise when they hit 10 million players in the first three days of the launch, and now 25 million players in just a week and a peak of over 2 million of concurrent users. This number may as well put Apex in the league of Fornite’s – but that’s just too early to tell.

Apex Legends hits 25 million players ina week

Apex Legends is a free to play battle royale game developed by Respawn. In the announcement made by Vince Zampella (Respawn Entertainment) in EA’s blog, he said that the game is doing more than great. In the same post, he also announced upcoming events for Apex Legends. One of those is the one that Twitch is sponsoring, called Twitch Rivals Challenge. It is an event that will pit 48 of the biggest streamers together to compete against each other for $200.000 in prizes. This event will be held today and again on February 19.

Aside from that, Apex Legends will also have a Valentine’s Day event where the player gets Valentine’s themed loot. Last on the list is the Apex Legends Battle Pass that will premiere on March. There will be new characters, new legends, loot, weapons, and many more.

Why the buzz?

Apex Legends is doing remarkably well and the buzz isn’t dying anytime soon. So why? The magic is probably due to their accessibility settings. Polygon’s Cass Marshall wrote about the shockingly good settings of Apex and specifically the audio section of the menu and its varied options. Apex went beyond and took extra measures to accommodate players who may have difficulties in hearing, speech, and sight. For more of these options, give Marshall’s opinion a go.

Below there is a recap/review of Apex Legend. See for yourself!

Civilization VI: Gathering Storm, bad weather incoming

With Civilization VI: Gathering Storm being released in a couple of days, we wanted to explain all the fans of the strategy the reasons to be excited about the launch of this new DLC. This expansion for Civilization VI puts an emphasis on climate change as its main theme. Now not only will you have to battle it out against eight new civilizations and nine new leaders, but you will have to contend with Mother Nature too.

With Gathering Storm, the usual “finding a spot to settle on” dilemma will become more difficult as some civilizations like the Maori will start at the sea, gaining bonuses every turn they do not settle down. You will also be able to take advantage of the Phoenicians ability that lets them move their capital to another city with their unique building. Those tactical opportunities will definitely make for a much more interesting game.

Gathering Storm – Volcano eruption

Now building on a flood plain or a volcano puts you into risks of natural disasters, but it also does have advantages and you can always try to work your strategy around those. Disasters are random and they will strike anytime. They are not like an aggressive civilization that you can keep content or erase from history. At least from modern age onward, you can construct buildings and projects that can mitigate the problems caused by climate change.

Considering that resources like coal and oil will produce CO2 and accelerate the climate change, taking time to change to a new energy source will be worth the time and the effort it takes to switch all your cities and units to clean energy.

Gathering Storm – Example of a city

Regarding politics, the World Congress will be able to create an emergency event were you force other civilizations to send emergency help. These events are similar to other emergencies, and each civilization will try to outdo others to earn points. Also, the new diplomacy system allows the use of favor as a currency, just like gold or promises. Competing in international events, helping in emergencies and gaining allies will speed up the process to gain diplomatic favor. Once you have enough, you can use it in World Congress meetings to push your own global agenda. This also has become a new viable strategy to achieve a diplomatic victory and it makes the game much more fun.

Overall, Gathering Storm is a great expansion for Civilization VI. It brings new mechanics that will spice up your gameplay with a lot of strategic options, but also new content like new scenarios, civilizations, seven new world wonders, seven natural wonders, 18 new units, 15 new improvements, 9 new buildings, 5 new districts, 2 new city sets, 9 new techs and 10 new civics.
