Hello everyone, and welcome to the week! It’s time once again for our look back at the noteworthy updates of the last seven days. As usual, lots of big and/or popular games got new content this week, along with a handful of less-frequently seen titles. I’ve gathered up a nice little bunch for you to scan over while you devour your Hot Pockets or Cinnamon Toast Crunch or whatever the devil you kids are eating for breakfast these days. Of course, you can keep an eye out for updates yourself using AppShopper or by participating in the TouchArcade forums. This weekly summary is just here to fill you in on the things you might have missed. Let’s go for it!
Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, Free
Hey, it’s time for another Animal Crossing Pocket Camp update already. I’m sure the developers are looking forward to the new console game’s release to help generate some new content and interest in this game, but for now, we soldier on as-is. The big new addition this time is the Happy Homeroom, which is like a small-scale version of that Happy Home Designer spin-off from a while back. There are also a bunch of improvements to the game’s UI to make it easier to get at things like the Fortune Cookie Shop. Bug fixes? Yep, some bug fixes.
Toon Blast, Free
Yes, it’s the requisite free-to-play match-3 update for the week. Toon Blast is the biggest non-King hit in this genre, and I couldn’t even begin to tell you why. But that’s hardly necessary for this article, which really only seeks to inform you of a list of games that got updates in the last week, of which this is one. It has 50 new levels themed around gardening because why not? Having said that, my work here is finished. I now move on.
Brawl Stars, Free
Hey now, it’s-a Brawl Stars, get the game on, go play. Like… like the song from Mystery Men that became the song from Shrek, you know? It’s very popular with a certain demographic. And so is this game! Flawless, Shaun. Absolutely flawless. Now segue into the update. Real smooth-like. There’s a new game mode here called Siege where you have to fight over parts that are then used to build a robot which in turn will be used to smash enemy bases. Nice. And a new Brawler is joining the line-up soon! His name is Carl. He has a pick axe.
I won’t stop including these games in the round-up until Austin the butler gets into Smash. You know my terms, Mr. Sakurai. Um, anyway, what’s new in Gardenscapes? Apparently a wedding story line with Alex and Jason. You get to help make the wedding dress and everything. This update adds in a couple of new elements in the match-3 portion of the game, and sets a couple of other events rolling as well. Austin for Smash. Do it.
Star Trek Fleet Command, Free
If there’s one thing you can say about Star Trek Fleet Command, it’s that it is certainly a game that exists and can be downloaded on your iPhone or iPad. Probably your Android too, but I’m not going to check. Anyway, if you’re playing this because you like Star Trek and there’s inexplicably little else to play with that license, you may be happy to see the latest update. It adds new star systems with material mines, 19 new Klingon Separatist missions, new star systems connected to said missions, and some new ship upgrades. Also, bug fixes.
Pocket Build, $1.99
You know, I always feel good when I see Pocket Build show up in the update list. It’s like The Little Engine That Could or something. All these huge companies make building games and the hottest hand out there right now is this little charmer. As for this update, it includes advanced rotation in edit mode, horses, six new boats, new camera settings, various UI and performance improvements, and yes, the bug fixes. And hey, some improved animation too. That’s nice. Keep on swinging at this, MoonBear. You’re doing fine work.
Kingdom Rush Vengeance, $4.99
Mmm, new content. Now that’s the taste that pleases, is it not? So apparently this update has you joining Dark Lord… Vez’nan? to fend off King Polyx and his ocean-faring forces. IMPERIOUS REX! Oh wait, he’s probably not related to that particular underwater king at all. Which is too bad, because Namor really needs to be in every game ever. Yes, even that one you’re thinking of right now. That one, too.
So, the original content in ELOH wasn’t hard enough for you, eh? Well, here’s something just for you: 14 new levels to play, and holy smokes, are they doozies. They pick up from level 85, so if you haven’t already gotten there you’ll have to do that first. But to be honest, if you haven’t already made your way through the existing levels, you’re probably not ready for these new ones anyway. This update also adds in proper support for the new iPad Pro.
Well, this is still the hot new thing as far as the mobile gaming masses are concerned, with no sign of Apex Legends or the like coming to the platform yet. And hey, Season 8 is here! That means lots of new stuff, like… um, Pirate Cannons! And Volcanic Vents that you can ride into the air! And party assist? I don’t know. Lots of stuff to keep you busy until the next content drop, no doubt. Nothing else is really jumping out at me this week, so I suppose I’ll give Fortnite the coveted UMMSotW award today. Enjoy, you probably won’t get another one for a long while.
Mortal Kombat, Free
Okay, so I guess this app isn’t Mortal Kombat X anymore. Which makes sense because it kind of never was? With the release of Mortal Kombat 11 coming soon, the title is no longer useful even as a marketing prop, so away it goes. Besides the title change, this update also adds a few Mortal Kombat 11 characters to the roster. The Mortal Kombat 11 versions of Jade, Raiden, and Scorpion are all up for grabs through various means. This update also boots 23 Gold characters up to Diamond status and adds new team synergies. There are new quests, new maps, and a whole lot of other changes, which makes sense as this is something of a rewrite of the game to a certain extent. The bad news? You now have to be online to play it. “Security” reasons. Ha. Well, whatever.
That about wraps it up for last week’s significant updates. I’m sure I’ve missed some, though, so please feel free to comment below and let everyone know if you think something should be mentioned. As usual, major updates will likely get their own news stories throughout this week, and I’ll be back next Monday to summarize and fill in the blanks. Have a great week!
