Total Party Kill Review – Jolly Good Cooperation

What were once three close friends turn into diabolical frenemies with the release of Adventure Islands’ Total Party Kill. A puzzle platformer that has you sacrificing your friends for victory, should you slaughter your bros for the greater good?

Total Party Kill Review

Taking the role of a knight, an archer, and a mage, this trio sets out on the hunt for a great treasure. However, the path to riches is treacherous, and sacrifices must be made along the way. Though this title has got your bog standard fantasy tropes, the story takes a backseat to the gameplay.

Said gameplay puts the focus on platforming, albeit with a puzzle twist. All characters have a jump and a special ability – the knight can swing his sword, the mage can cast a freezing spell, and the archer does his best work with arrows. Players are able to switch between each of these three characters with the press of the A button, which proves to be a fairly intuitive method.

The end goal is to navigate 60 single screen levels to the exit. This is far easier said than done though; spikes, switches, and high up areas all prove to be a challenge. However, players will be able to find a path to the exit by killing off each other. Need to create a pathway among the spikes? Why not turn your buddies into blocks of ice? Exit out of the way? Why not shoot an arrow through the heart of your bros?

It might seem straightforward at first, but Total Party Kill has fun with this concept. Early levels give way to complex creations that have players reflecting shots using mirrors, timing switches, and doing all manner of stunts. There is occasionally more than one solution for each area, but even the hardest level won’t stump players for too long. It can sometimes be cumbersome to switch between the three and lay things out just right, but cracking the code of each level is a satisfying feeling. Just be warned that the reset button is buried in the pause menu; a standalone button on the main screen would have streamlined things a considerable amount.

When all is said and done and the treasure is yours, expect to finish your playtime in around an hour. It does not overstay its welcome, but this proves to be a one and done type of game. The lack of variety in the stylings of each level tends to have things run together too, leading to a same-y feeling throughout. Despite this, the spritework is truly charming for the three protagonists. For characters that are so small in stature, they manage to evoke a fair deal of emotion when giving up the ghost.

Total Party Kill is a short but sweet puzzle platformer with a unique concept. Though stages begin to bleed together after a while, the planning that goes into each level is worth experiencing at least once.

Phoenix Point gets its factions revealed

All of the fans of the turn-based strategy games have been waiting for quite long already to see what the creator of the original XCOM series has to offer in his new game. Even though the latest games in the series, like XCOM: Enemy Unknown, XCOM: Enemy Within, and XCOM 2 have managed to secure the place of the series among the best in the genre, Julian Gollop has managed to gather the attention for all the players that loved the UFO: Enemy Unknown and UFO: Terror from the Deep when he announced the development of Phoenix Point.

Not only will Phoenix Point offer us the best squad-based strategy that we are used to. It will take the fight against aliens to a new level with an innovative targeting system that allows you to aim and line up the shots of your soldiers in order to specific certain body parts of the objective to disable them and cause diverse effects.

Humanity’s fight against invading forces is a recurring story that will be very familiar to the fans of the series. This time the threat to our planet will come in the form of evolving mutants created by the alien Pandovirus but there are also going to be several factions in the game, each of them with its own agenda.

The Phoenix Project is the organization you belong to in the game. It´s formed by some of the best fighters, scientists, and engineers in the world and it’s objective is to defend the planet and fight against the alien threat.

The Disciples of Anu are a cult whose members believe in the existence of an alien God. They have devised ways to create human-alien hybrids and are ruled by the Exalted. They embrace the changes produced by the Pandovirus as a form of salvation.

The Synedrion is a faction formed by radical ecologists that seek to build a new civilization. They use advanced technology to keep the alien mist at bay and integrate it as part of the ecosystem of the planet.

New Jericho is a group of militaristic human-focused survivalists, who believe that the alien threat has to be eliminated by the use of the force, and they will use any means at their disposal to do so, putting an emphasis on warfare and military technology that includes human enhancements.

All these factions will be present in Phoenix Point adding a degree of complexity to the strategy in the game when it launches on December 3, 2020.

Final Fantasy VII Remake will include new content

Final Fantasy series includes some of the most popular RPGs of all time, but the one that comes to our attention is no other than the legendary Final Fantasy VII. The story of Cloud Strife and his impossible fight against Shinra to save the planet took the role-playing game from Square Enix to new heights when Final Fantasy VII was launched in 1997 for PlayStation. Today, it still is one of the favorite games of the fans of the series, who are eagerly waiting for the remake that is currently in the works.

Square Enix has revealed that the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Remake will have more content for the players to explore and it won’t only be the same game with modern graphics. The game will include a number of new bosses and characters. That means that we will see small changes in the story of the game, but none of the new additions will be a main character in the game. The fans don’t have to worry about the story being completely different in Final Fantasy VII Remake since the intention of the developers is ensuring that the spirit of the original game is kept intact while still managing to surprise players that are familiar with the series.

From Chocobo races to the fights against the Weapons, it’s undoubtedly impossible to produce in the players the same sensations that they felt when they discovered the game for the first time, but Final Fantasy VII Remake aims to deliver an experience that will be enough to satisfy the nostalgic ones, especially those who are not happy with the way in which the series has evolved through the years.

Whether you have played the original game or not, Final Fantasy VII Remake will definitely be a title to have in your gaming library when it launches on March 3rd, 2020, on PlayStation 4.

Spring Falls Review

Mixing absolute serenity with puzzling gameplay, SPARSE//GameDev Spring Falls transports players to a world of “peace, nature, and hexagons.” Does this title provide a zen-like state, or is this jaunt in nature strictly for the birds?

Spring Falls Review

A number of budding blossoms need some help sprouting, but they need water and grass to help them survive. However, the terrain is at your fingertips – by shifting hexagons, one can control the flow of water and create a clear cut path for this little sapling to turn into a mighty plant that shines brightly and makes a pleasing melody that’s music to your ears.

However, things are far easier said than done. Set across 60 different cliffsides, players must contend with waterfalls, patches of dirt that magically spring high into the air with a little bit of water, flooding, and multiple saplings that all need some love. Easy levels quickly give way to complex affairs, ones that require a bit of finesse and trial and error to get ahead. Though more elements would have been welcome, what is here adds enough complexity to never make things boring or simple.

Note that it never gets frustrating. Challenging, yes, but never frustrating. Though there is typically only one clear cut solution for each puzzle, Spring Falls does everything in its power to make the process as smooth as possible. Moves can just as easily be undone, and players can even skip ahead a handful of levels if one proves to be too puzzling. If for some reason there’s a fail state, the worst that’s going to happen is a small squeak from a plant – nothing to be alarmed about.

Just be warned that this is a one and done type of game. Though the suite of levels took us a little over two hours to complete, there are no achievements or anything else to keep players coming back. A scoring system, or perhaps a way to make your own puzzles, would have given this game some legs. It’s far from a deal breaker, but this is one title where once you know the solution, you’re good to go. As it stands, this title took us a little more than two hours to finish.

Rounding Spring Falls out is a stylish audiovisual presentation that sets out to relax the player. The chirping birds and sounds of water provide an atmospheric vibe that helps you get lost in its world, and the soft, warm colors are a sight to behold. Most music is soft guitar melodies that get lost in the background, but they are well done and complement the game quite well. There is also a vocal track that players can experience at the end of the title that ties everything together.

Spring Falls provides a relaxing experience that offers up challenging puzzle gameplay without ever being unfair. Though this is a one and done type of title, its trek to nature is worth it for those looking to get away from it all.
