Journey Review – Climb That Mountain

After making waves on PlayStation consoles, Annapurna Interactive and thatgamecompany have brought the journey of Journey to the PC. The title received a fair amount of attention when it launched in 2012 – does it still provide a compelling adventure seven years later?

Journey Review

The story of Journey is told through its world, rather than through words. Taking control of a hooded creature, a mountain with a glowing spire is your point of focus throughout this title. It is fairly far away though, with a wide desert expanse coming between you and your destination. What follows is a title that takes players through a number of different scenarios on their way to the top.

This approach works wonders in creating an atmosphere. Though there are brief cutscenes that flesh out its world, the game prides itself on showing rather than telling. Journey is a looker – the art direction, camera angles, and overall aesthetics create a world that stands out and has a personality all its own. Some parts remain a little cryptic, but it’s not hard to follow or verbose.

Gameplay follows a similar approach. Prompts pop up at the beginning of the game to show the basics of movement and other functions, but figuring out how things work will come to the player through trial and error. The hooded creature can jump with the aid of certain bits of tapestry or creatures, and a chime can be used to activate things around its world. There is a touch of platforming, but it never gets frustrating due to its lack of a fail state. There are no baddies to conquer, bottomless pits to contend with, or anything else that’ll hinder your playthrough – Journey set out to remove all points of frustration at every step of the way.

Each environment of this title has a different hook to it, whether it be a bridge that must be formed, a tower that must be climbed, or creatures that must be freed. The desert motif is used for most of the title, but each area manages to stay fresh throughout and does not overstay its welcome. The entirety of the game is a bit on the short side – we were able to finish in about an hour and a half – but there was no filler to speak of.

One of the biggest hooks of the game (which could be considered a spoiler) is the fact that a second player can come along for the ride. At random times of the game, a second companion can play Journey alongside you. The chime is your only form of communication – text and voice chat are not available, and players won’t even know the user’s handle until after the game is over. We only had one person join us for a brief portion of the game, but your mileage may vary, depending on the time of play.

Note that the game is not without its technical issues. The computer used to review Journey has some decent specs, but the music would stutter and the framerate would occasionally take a hit. Again, your mileage may vary, but it is still something to consider.

Journey’s journey to the PC is a successful one, …

How to Set ulimit and file descriptors limit on Linux Servers

Introduction:  Challenges like number of open files in any of the production environment has become common now a day. Since many applications which are Java based and Apache based, are getting installed and configured, which may lead to many open files, file descriptors etc. If this exceeds the default limit that is set, then one may face access control problems and file opening challenges. Many production environments come to standstill kind of situations because of this.

ulimit-number-openfiles-linux-server

Luckily, we have “ulimit” command in any of the Linux based server, by which one can see/set/get number of files open status/configuration details. This command is equipped with many options and with this combination one can set number of open files. Following are step-by-step commands with examples explained in detail.

To see what is the present open file limit in any Linux System

To get open file limit on any Linux server, execute the following command,

[[email protected] ~]# cat /proc/sys/fs/file-max
146013

The above number  shows that user can open ‘146013’ file per user login session.

[[email protected] ~]# cat /proc/sys/fs/file-max
149219
[[email protected] ~]# cat /proc/sys/fs/file-max
73906

This clearly indicates that individual Linux operating systems have different number of open files. This is based on dependencies and applications which are running in respective systems.

ulimit command :

As the name suggests, ulimit (user limit) is used to display and set resources limit for logged in user. When we run ulimit command with -a option then it will print all resources’ limit for the logged in user. Now let’s run “ulimit -a” on Ubuntu / Debian and CentOS systems,

Ubuntu / Debian System,

[email protected] ~}$ ulimit -a
core file size          (blocks, -c) 0
data seg size           (kbytes, -d) unlimited
scheduling priority             (-e) 0
file size               (blocks, -f) unlimited
pending signals                 (-i) 5731
max locked memory       (kbytes, -l) 64
max memory size         (kbytes, -m) unlimited
open files                      (-n) 1024
pipe size            (512 bytes, -p) 8
POSIX message queues     (bytes, -q) 819200
real-time priority              (-r) 0
stack size              (kbytes, -s) 8192
cpu time               (seconds, -t) unlimited
max user processes              (-u) 5731
virtual memory          (kbytes, -v) unlimited
file locks                      (-x) unlimited

CentOS System

[email protected] ~}$ ulimit -a
core file size          (blocks, -c) 0
data seg size           (kbytes, -d) unlimited
scheduling priority             (-e) 0
file size               (blocks, -f) unlimited
pending signals                 (-i) 5901
max locked memory       (kbytes, -l) 64
max memory size         (kbytes, -m) unlimited
open files                      (-n) 1024
pipe size            (512 bytes, -p) 8
POSIX message queues     (bytes, -q) 819200

max user processes              (-u) 5901
virtual memory          (kbytes, -v) unlimited
file locks                      (-x) unlimited

As we can be seen here different OS have different limits set. All these limits can be configured/changed using “ulimit” command.

To display the individual resource limit then pass the individual parameter in ulimit command, some of parameters are listed below:

  • ulimit -n  –> it will display number of open files limit
  • ulimit -c –> it display the size of core file, zero means you are not allowed to take core dump.
  • umilit -u –> it will display the maximum user process limit for the logged in user.
  • ulimit -f –> it will display the maximum file size that the

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order – Excitement and Concerns

Story 326877533

It’s amazing how much a simple, fourteen-minute gameplay trailer can tell you about the latest upcoming title. Everybody is excited to have a legitimate Star Wars campaign to play through, and we’ll be examining what should be tickling our Star Wars bones and what should actually have us concerned about the upcoming title, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order by Respawn Entertainment. Despite some potential backlash from a few of my editors, I think the best way to analyze the trailer is to break it into parts and put large headings above each section I want to talk about.

Main Character, Cal Kestis

NARRATIVE

As far as the placement of this in the Star Wars universe goes, the game is considered canon and takes place during and directly following the events of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. The infamous “Order 66” occurs as one of the events in the game, to give you a better idea. For the true Star Wars nerds out there, we’ll go even further. The game is set around the year 19 Before the Battle of Yavin (BBY). How far the game’s story will branch outside of that year is unknown. You play as Cal Kestis, a padawan spared during the purge of the Jedi upon the execution of Order 66. You follow him through a coming-of-age story as he becomes a true Jedi Knight and aims to take back the galaxy.

From what we saw in the gameplay trailer, the actual story doesn’t get many additions. We do see Saw Gerrera leading a group of rebels into an imperial sap refinery on Kashyyyk, the home planet of the wookiees. Here, wookiees have been enslaved by the Empire and forced to do manual labor. Based on the Star Wars timeline, it’s highly likely that Gerrera’s group is part of the Partisans, a rebel militia formed by Gerrera around the same time as Order 66. During this time, the Partisans are working closely with the Alliance to fight off the Galactic Empire.

Other than this, there aren’t any details beyond what we already know about the game. However, from a critical standpoint, we get a decent look at the dialogue we can expect. It all seems a little clunky. Both the acting and the dialogue writing seem painfully average considering the potential that this game has. Should we just accept that all the dialogue is going to be terrible? Of course not, but what we saw today was less than impressive. We’ve come to expect more from the acting in our games these days, and while the dialogue certainly won’t be a deal breaker, it’s concerning how plastic it feels. Simple lines like, “Yeah, better do this by the books,” and “You just wanted to turn that cutter on,” fall flat. Hopefully the dialogue is better in the important cutscenes throughout the game.

SOUND DESIGN

Holy crap! If there’s one thing that’s important to anything Star Wars, it’s sound. The sounds of blasters, lightsabers, droids, and TIE fighters are so unique, and what we saw from EA today captures it all perfectly. The only sounds I personally found a bit iffy are the lightsaber being activated and deactivated. They don’t quite do it …
