A new Black Ops 4 season full of surprises starts today

A new season for Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4 starts today and Treyarch has a load of new features and surprises ready for us. The content will be appearing progressively along the following weeks and we will be getting something new every day.

Operation Grand Heist arrives today (first on PlayStation 4 and a bit later on PC and Xbox One, as usual) and it comes full of content for all modes. This is the unlocking schedule for the week:

– Tuesday, Feb. 19: Multiplayer gets a new specialist, the Outrider, equipped with a pilotable scouting drone and a deadly bow with explosive arrows. It also gets the One in the Chamber mode (three lives, one bullet, you better aim to kill) along with some balance updates for weapons. Blackout is getting a new Ghost Town destination with two locations, new buildings, and a refurbished Prestige system for those that have reached Echelon level 80. If you are more into Zombies, you will enjoy the new “Death-Con Five” Gauntlet, and the Ethereal Razor perk, as well as getting an additional tier Skip for completing your dailies. Also, Black Market is getting a load of new items, including characters, weapons, outfits and more

– Wednesday, February 20: We will see the comeback of a familiar face on the new Operation. No clue about who it is yet.

– Thursday, February 21: League Play kicks off in multiplayer and Zombies will support the new weapons from the Black Market.

– Friday, February 22: Blackout gets three fancy new vehicles: SV, PBR, and Muscle Car on the Hot Pursuit mode

Black Ops Pass holders will get some extra rewards too, like two new multiplayer maps, Casino and Lockout, or the Cosmic Silverback character for Blackout.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 – Outrider

All of this content is coming just during the first week of the season, but Treyarch has quite a bit more novelties in storage for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. As the season progresses we will see many new additions, like a brand new Hardcore Mode for Blackout or the “Hellcatraz” Gauntlet for Zombies.

If you want to know more about this new Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 season you can check the official blog here, and you can check our comparator too to find the best prices for the game.

‘Oceanhorn 2’ Shown Off in New Unreal Engine Project Spotlight Video

While it’s been more than two and a half years since Cornfox & Bros. originally announced Oceanhorn 2: Knights of the Lost Realm, since the calendar turned to 2019 the team has been more frequent with updating fans on the game’s progress. Just a couple of weeks ago they released a video where they showed off an in-progress version of the game at an IGDA Finland event, and now Epic and Unreal Engine have released a new video showcasing Cornfox & Bros. and Oceanhorn 2, which is being developed in Unreal Engine 4. Obviously much of the video is talking about the virtues of using Unreal Engine, but it brings up some good points. The original Oceanhorn ($7.99) used an engine they wrote themselves, and when it came time to port the game to additional platforms this caused a lot of extra work and development time. With Unreal Engine that porting process should be much simpler with Oceanhorn 2.

In addition to making porting easier, using a third-party engine gives them more time to devote to building out content in the game as opposed to fussing around with their own engine. I love the quote that “The engine for a game, it’s like a camera for a filmmaker. So [by using Unreal Engine] you don’t have to start by building the camera, you can just focus on the content.” I was also shocked to learn that Cornfox & Bros. is just six people, and at the time they released the original Oceanhorn in 2013 they were just a team of three. That’s pretty incredible. You can find some more information and some gorgeous new screens of Oceanhorn 2 over on the Unreal Engine blog, and as always we’ll be keeping a close eye on how this highly-anticipated title continues to shape up.

More ‘Gunslugs: Rogue Tactics’ Gameplay Footage Released

It’s been about a month since we last checked in on Gunslugs: Rogue Tactics, and today developer Orangepixel has released another lengthy video of the game in action. To back things up, Gunslugs: Rogue Tactics is more or less Gunslugs 3, but the extremely fast-paced run ‘n gun action of the first two games has been transformed into a more methodical, strategic affair with a ton of stealth elements. Hence the “tactics” part of the title. The biggest change since our last look at Rogue Tactics is that a mission system has been built into the game which will see you hopping into a level and looking to complete certain tasks. You can also see lots of the cool gadgets and different stealth mechanics on display in this latest video.

Gunslugs: Rogue Tactics was actually officially announced back in November of 2017, and work continued off and on for the next year alongside other projects as Orangepixel shaped the game into something they were satisfied with. We got a lengthy look at the game in November of last year, but not long after that the art style was basically totally revamped for the better, which you can see in the previous video released last month. As Orangepixel points out in our forums, Gunslugs: Rogue Tactics likely won’t make its intended March launch window, but it’s still coming along nicely and it shouldn’t be TOO much longer until the game is finished. If you just can’t wait you can actually get in on beta versions of the game by joining the Orangepixel Patreon. We’ll continue keeping tabs on this one as development of Gunslugs: Rogue Tactics continues.

Ustwo Working on Two New Mobile Games, Talks About Difficulty of Creating in the Long Shadow Cast by ‘Monument Valley’

It’s hard to find more of an all-around mobile gaming success story than Ustwo’s Monument Valley series. When the original game launched in the spring of 2014 its Escher-esque visual style and level designs captured the imagination of both the gaming world and the mainstream world at large. It won a seemingly never-ending stream of awards, including a coveted Apple Design Award at WWDC 2014 as well as Apple’s own pick for iPad Game of the Year 2014. It was also a huge financial success for Ustwo not even a year into its launch, and seemed to only sell better with age.

Monument Valley looked like it would be a tough act to follow, but in June of 2017 at WWDC Apple was in the midst of talking about their massive App Store redesign when they surprise announced that Monument Valley 2 was launching that day. The sequel brought even more gorgeous puzzle levels but also a touching story about a mother and child, and Monument Valley 2 went on to be an even bigger success than the original game. Ustwo pulled off the rarely possible feat of releasing a masterpiece to a masterpiece.

Ustwo thus became synonymous with their critical hit game series, and while they proved they were able to make more of what people loved so much about their original breakout hit, what does “the Monument Valley studio” do when it wants to make a game other than Monument Valley? That’s the tricky part, as Ustwo goes on to explain in the following video from Red Bull and House Of Greenland’s excellent gaming mini-documentary series Levels. Ustwo actually has TWO new games in the works, and while they’re shrouded in secrecy you do get enough of a glimpse at both of them in the video below to let your imagination go wild, and more importantly you get a really great look at the fantastic culture that courses through the veins of this London-based studio.

It was funny seeing them mention Whale Trail, as way back in 2011 we actually loved that game in our review but sadly it pretty quickly was seen as a flop. It pivoted to a free to play model and somewhat righted the ship, but still was never a financial success. Our own ever-prescient Eli Hodapp said at the time that “I’d love to say ‘hopefully this doesn’t discourage them from iOS development’ as I think it’s outfits like Ustwo that seem the most likely to push the platform forward…” Thankfully that did not discourage Ustwo, and I think it’s safe to say that the Monument Valley games very much did push the mobile platform forward.

I think one of the big reasons Ustwo was able to succeed with Monument Valley is that their parent, the hugely successful design firm side of Ustwo, told the gaming division side to just make something that was great and meaningful without worrying about the making money part. Could you imagine the disaster that would be Monument Valley but with all the typical free to play shenanigans woven in? I don’t even want to think about that. I imagine that for these next two games Ustwo has a similar lack of financial …

New Crystal-Themed Items Rewarded In New ‘Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp’ Fishing Tourney

As the coldest of the winter months are slowly (very, very slowly) coming to an end, things are staying hot in Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp (Free) thanks to a new beach fishing tourney. Let’s just ignore the snow in the background and celebrate, as Chip has returned to Saltwater Shores! As always, he brings a Golden Rod at a charge to double your fishy catches with each cast.

Chip walks across Saltwater Shores to greet the player

This event’s fish include the chambered nautilus, coelacanth, and horseshoe crab. Unfortunately, there are no fish tanks with these creatures available through this event. Trophies are awarded at 10 cm (wood), 1,000 cm (bronze), 2,800 cm (silver), and 9,000 cm (gold).

As always, there are loads of goodies to earn by heading down to the digital beach; the theme this time is pink crystals. The rewards, and when you can earn them, are:

  • pink crystal hairpin: once between 25 and 200 cm, four between 9,800 cm and 15,800 cm
  • crystal lamp (pink): once between 300 and 650 cm
  • crystal shelves (pink): once between 800 and 1,300 cm
  • crystal bed (pink): once between 1,500 and 2,700 cm
  • pink crystal rug: once between 2,800 cm and 3,800 cm
  • levitating pink crystal: once between 4,600 cm and 8,600 cm
  • pink crystal: once between 9,800 cm and 15,800 cm, more available post-completion at random every 600cm
  • gorgeous pink crystal: once between 9,800 cm and 15,800 cm, more available post-completion at random every 600cm

Fishing Tourney rewards, as described above

If most of these items look familiar, don’t worry, you’re not having déjà vu. Several are pink reskins of items rewarded during the Crystal Collection event, which was held in-game last February. It’s time to mix and match!

Fishing Tourney #11: Pink Crystal runs through February 25 at 1:00 a.m. EST. It will wrap up the events portions of Candy Cluster Muster, in which the player collects sweets by completing goals to earn a special gumball machine and cotton-candy cloud (which is extra adorable for photos).

What’s next for Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp? We don’t yet know what events we’ll be getting next month, but we do know that Pavé will be joining the camp sometime later this month as a special NPC character with his very own dancing stage. Viva Festivale!

SwitchArcade Round-Up: ‘City of Brass’, ‘Alchemic Dungeons DX’, and ‘Minesweeper Genius!’ Reviews, Today’s New Releases, the Latest Sales, and More

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for February 18th, 2019. Last week was a bit of a rough one for me, but I’m ready to tackle the new week with renewed vigor. As such, I’ve got as many as three reviews for you today, along with some news, new release information, the usual sales list, and more. Let’s dig in!

Kawase from ‘Umihara Kawase’ Has Been Revealed for ‘Crystal Crisis’

Given the roster of Nicalis’s cross-over fighter Blade Strangers, this isn’t exactly a surprising reveal, but Kawase from Umihara Kawase has been officially unveiled as a member of the roster of Crystal Crisis. For those who don’t remember the title, Crystal Crisis is a cross-over puzzle game set to release on May 28th. The roster includes many characters from Blade Strangers, including Solange from Code of Princess EX, Quote and Curly Brace from Cave Story, Isaac from Binding of Isaac, and others. It also features a couple of famous characters from Tezuka Productions in the form of Astro Boy and Black Jack. And it has Johnny Turbo for some reason. In all, 20 characters have been revealed, and it seems like that’s the full roster, barring any secrets.

‘SEGA AGES Alex Kidd in Miracle World’ Hits Japan February 21st

The SEGA AGES release of Alex Kidd in Miracle World kept getting punted down the line as SEGA kept announcing new additions to the schedule, but the company finally announced it was nearing release last week. Originally, it seemed like the next game released would be Puyo Puyo, something that seemed even more likely when SEGA announced it would be coming to the West along with Gain Ground in February. Well, we’re running out of February, so I’m not sure what’s going on with Puyo Puyo. But Alex Kidd? It seems like he’s ready to roll. The game will come out in Japan this Thursday, in fact. Presumably a Western release won’t be too far behind, and I suspect it’s going to be taking Puyo Puyo‘s place in the schedule following Gain Ground.

City of Brass ($19.99)

It’s easy to see why roguelike elements have become such a popular part of indie games over the years. When done right, they can dramatically increase the replay value of a game without ballooning the amount of time or money it takes to make a game. While pure roguelikes can be hard to pull off on systems that don’t have keyboards for a variety of reasons, it turns out that you can separate out many parts from the whole and use them as valuable ingredients in other kinds of games. City of Brass is one such fusion, adding things like permadeath and random generation to the familiar first-person action genre.

We’ve seen this sort of mix before in games, however. Even on the Switch, I could gesticulate wildly in the direction of Immortal Redneck. City of Brass has two interesting gimmicks to its name, and they’re both rather important to any assessment of its quality. First is its setting, pulled straight from the Arabian Nights stories. The City of Brass is a great place to set a …

The “Fortnite Live” Festival Was a Disaster

Fortnite (Free) continues to be the hottest thing, not only since sliced bread, but since someone decided to put a piece of cheese between two slices of bread and toast it. Unfortunately, as we’ve seen so many times before, when something gets ultra popular there’s no shortage of folks looking to do whatever they can to cash in on the phenomenon. (It’s even happening locally in the Chicago area here, with these indoor trampoline family fun centers doing Fortnite-themed lock-ins.) Potentially the most egregious example of folks looking to cash in on Fortnite mania was the “Fortnite Live” festival which was held at the Norfolk Showground, just outside of Norwich in the United Kingdom.

As pointed out by The Guardian, Fortnite Live was able to draw a large crowd of people who paid £12 to get in along with an additional £20 bracelet (roughly $41 USD combined) for unlimited access to all of the “attractions”. What were the attractions? Super boring carnival rentals, with almost nothing to do with Fortnite aside from signs naming different areas after locations in the game.

These attractions included the climbing wall above, a “cave experience” which was a trailer that had a tarp over it, a tiny stage for dance competitions, and an inflatable llama hidden away in the corner. Apparently thousands of people showed up to this event, staffed by only eight people, including folks who drove significant distances and stayed in hotels.

The sad part about all this is that it’s inevitably going to result in Epic cracking down on who uses the Fortnite brand name more than they already are. It’s totally reasonable for someone to see a “Fortnite Live” festival and think, “Oh hey my kid likes Fortnite, it’s a good game so this will probably be a good event,” only to show up to this disaster. It makes Epic look bad, even though they had absolutely nothing to do with it.

How about that cave experience, eh?

Ubisoft has confirmed that they will be running an Open Beta event for Trials Rising next weekend. The new installment of the Trials series will be available for everyone to try completely free from February 21 to 24 on PC, Xbox One, PS4, and Nintendo Switch. Just pre-download it as early as February 19 on the platform you prefer to be ready to start playing as soon as the beta starts on Thursday.

During the event, you will be able to experience all the fun of riding a motocross motorcycle through a variety of crazy tracks. Eighteen different tracks of several difficulties will be available for you on single player mode, allowing you to perfect your skills and try to beat your own times. There will also be different Contracts available for you which grant you rewards for the successful completion of several objectives. Once you are confident enough with your handling, you should also jump to online multiplayer races and compete against other players from all over the world on eight different tracks. As a bonus, if you manage to unlock the Helium Bike with the exclusive Turbo Bike Exhaust, it will carry over to your Trials Rising game if you purchase it once it launches.

If you have never played any of the games in the Trials series before, you should know that Trials Rising is a 2.5D racing game where you control a rider on a physics-based motocross motorcycle through an obstacle-filled racing track. The full game features everything that you will experience during the Open Beta, including the brand new co-op multiplayer Tandem Bike mode, where two people can ride a bike together; definitely a very challenging mode that will deliver lots of fun. The dates of The Division 2 open beta are known.

If you have not had the chance to participate in the closed beta that took place from February 7 to 11, and you’re eager to discover the next installment in the Tom Clancy’s series, then here’s a news that you should be more than happy to hear.

Ubisoft has announced on its dedicated forum that The Division 2 will soon be entitled to a beta phase open to all players. Even if until this moment no detail has been communicated regarding its content, we already know that it will be held from March 1 to 4 on Xbox One, PS4, and PC, just days ahead of the release planned for March 15. Ubisoft invites us on its site to stay tuned for more details on this beta of The Division 2.

The Division 2 Open Beta Announcement

The mystery remains intact for the moment. However, a message left by rwan007, a moderator of the forum, suggests that the content will be different from the one in the closed beta:

Hello,

From March 1st to 4th, there will be an open beta.

The content and possible rewards are still to be defined.
But according to the developers say it will not be the same beta as the “private”.

As a reminder, players who took part in the closed beta could play through two main missions and five side missions. They discovered the open world of The Division 2 also participating in an end-game mission for three characters of level 30, and finally accessing the Darkzone East, one of the largest three areas in the game.

More news should arrive in the coming days, and we will be sure to keep you informed. Anyway, this new phase of beta looks pretty good, especially after the developers announced that the closed beta met a great success with the players.

Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 will be released on March 15. Visit our comparator to find the best price for it.
