The State of Play that was held yesterday by Sony served as a platform to announce a variety of news regarding the games published by the company, and the upcoming installment in the Call of Duty series is too relevant to be left out. We could see the reveal of a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare cinematic trailer that introduces the campaign of the game, a story that will put Captain John Price in the spotlight once more, as he joins forces with the CIA to put a stop to the global distribution of chemical weapons.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will be more focused on delivering a real and modern combat experience based on modern conflicts, moving away from zombies and futuristic technology. The events behind the combat, its causes and consequences will be an important point in the game, making us question ourselves about the morality of our actions. This has been commented by Infinity Ward studio narrative director Taylor Kurosaki, who in a post on the official blog writes:

“At its core, the story of Modern Warfare is about how the complexities of modern conflict take a toll on everyone involved. In many ways, we are in a world where there are not always simply ‘good guys’ or ‘bad guys’; there is no black or white. Rather, reality is typically the grey area in the middle. So how does one achieve their version of the ‘greater good’ while navigating this complex world? How far are you willing to go to discern between ‘right’ and ‘wrong?’ Are you willing to cross certain barriers to defeat an enemy who has no battle lines drawn?”

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

Even though first-person shooters tend to focus mainly on the gameplay experience, especially regarding combat, weapons, vehicles, and such things, it’s interesting to see that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is deeper than that, trying to deliver a solid story that serves as the foundation of a shooter that goes beyond competitive multiplayer gameplay.
